Director Ryu Hyung-seok, who served as a conscripted firefighter during his mandatory military service, made a documentary about firefighters. Responding to calls from those on the edge of life and death, these modern-day heroes at the Yangsan Firestation and Ulsan Fire Headquarters are the focus of The First Responders. Without voiceover narration or interview shots, the film captures not only the team’s work and daily lives, but also their inner darkness, desires, and the difficult fate inherent in their profession. Here, the camera is not simply a tool for recording but is one of them, acting as their eyes. “Just strip away all emotion and focus on what you need to do,” one firefighter says, and the documentary mirrors this approach, moving steadily forward without being swept up by emotional waves. Yet the film inevitably reaches heart-warming moments. This documentary offers an exceptionally humanistic insight into the profession.

The late Kim Dong-il, a Jeju April 3 refugee in Japan, left behind over 2,000 crocheted items and pieces of clothing that preserved her memories, identity, and history. As the film traces the redistribution of her belongings, it illuminates the still-unhealed lives of various Zainichi Koreans who lived through the same era, sharing and connecting their intertwined memories.

SYNOPSIS In order to realize her dream of studying abroad, Ja-ie agrees to marry Kang Kuk, the son of Chairman Sohn of a conglomerate group. Jang Tae-ho, who actively advocated the marriage, feels passion for Ja-ie so he rapes her at a farewell party. When she arrives in America, Ja-ie discovers her husband is impotent and that the marriage is a sham. However, Ja-ie is pregnant with Tae-ho's baby. She accepts this as her fate. Ja-ie gets treatment for Kang Kuk and gives birth to Ho-ma. Chairman Sohn tries to get rid of Ja-ie by contracting gangsters in the United States. Ja-ie decides to have her revenge on Chairman Sohn and Tae-ho and returns to Korea.
